Ingredients
- 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (about 4 cups)
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons dry white wine (optional)
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
Kitchen Tools Needed:
- Large skillet
- Large mixing bowl
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Knife and cutting board
- Serving bowl
Steps
- Caramelize the Onions: Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 45-60 minutes until onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized. If onions start to stick, add a splash of water.
- Deglaze (Optional): Add white wine to the pan and scrape up any browned bits. Cook for 1-2 minutes until wine evaporates. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
- Prepare Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, and softened cream cheese. Mix until smooth and well combined.
- Add Seasonings: Stir in chives, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika until evenly distributed.
- Combine: Fold in the cooled caramelized onions, mixing gently to distribute throughout the dip.
- Chill & Serve: Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight to allow flavors to meld. Serve chilled with chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
