Ingredients

  1. 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (about 4 cups)
  2. 3 tablespoons butter
  3. 1 tablespoon olive oil
  4. 1 teaspoon salt
  5. 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  6. 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  7. 2 tablespoons dry white wine (optional)
  8. 1 cup sour cream
  9. 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  10. 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
  11. 2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped
  12. 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  13. 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  14. 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  15. 1/4 teaspoon paprika

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  1. Large skillet
  2. Large mixing bowl
  3. Wooden spoon
  4. Measuring cups and spoons
  5. Knife and cutting board
  6. Serving bowl

Steps

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, salt, pepper, and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 45-60 minutes until onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized. If onions start to stick, add a splash of water.
  2. Deglaze (Optional): Add white wine to the pan and scrape up any browned bits. Cook for 1-2 minutes until wine evaporates. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
  3. Prepare Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, and softened cream cheese. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  4. Add Seasonings: Stir in chives, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika until evenly distributed.
  5. Combine: Fold in the cooled caramelized onions, mixing gently to distribute throughout the dip.
  6. Chill & Serve: Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight to allow flavors to meld. Serve chilled with chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
