Ingredients

  1. For the Dough:
    • 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
    • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 large egg
    • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  2. For the Filling:
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  3. For the Cream Cheese Icing:
    • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
    • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2-3 tablespoons milk (to thin the icing)

Steps

  1. Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. Add the melted butter, salt, and egg to the yeast mixture, and stir to combine. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  2. Make the Filling: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until well combined.
  3. Roll and Fill the Dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a 15x9-inch rectangle. Spread the cinnamon-sugar filling evenly over the dough. Roll the dough tightly from the long side to form a log, then cut into 12 equal pieces.
  4. Second Rise: Place the cinnamon rolls in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  5. Bake the Cinnamon Rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  6. Make the Cream Cheese Icing: In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk, and mix until the icing is smooth and creamy.
  7. Frost and Serve: Spread the cream cheese icing over the warm cinnamon rolls. Serve immediately.
