Ingredients

  1. 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  2. 3 tablespoons butter
  3. 1 tablespoon olive oil
  4. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  5. 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  6. 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  7. 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  8. 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  9. 1/2 cup sour cream
  10. 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  11. 1 packet onion soup mix
  12. 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped
  13. 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  14. 1/2 cup gruyere cheese, grated (optional)

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  1. Large skillet
  2. Large mixing bowl
  3. Electric mixer or whisk
  4. Wooden spoon
  5. Measuring cups and spoons
  6. Knife and cutting board
  7. Serving bowl

Steps

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 45-60 minutes until onions are deep golden brown and jammy. Add brown sugar and balsamic vinegar in the last 5 minutes.
  2. Cool the Onions: Remove caramelized onions from heat and let cool completely, about 15 minutes.
  3. Prepare the Base: In a large mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese until smooth and fluffy. Add sour cream, mayonnaise, and onion soup mix. Mix until well combined.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Fold in the cooled caramelized onions, fresh chives, and thyme leaves. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
  5. Chill and Set: Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight to allow flavors to meld and dip to firm up.
  6. Final Touch (Optional): If using gruyere cheese, sprinkle on top and broil for 2-3 minutes until golden and bubbly before serving.
  7. Serve: Transfer to serving bowl and serve with chips, bread, or vegetables.
